Strategic Alignment

The University of Southern California Music Library supports the research and performance needs of the Thornton School of Music, and extends its resources and services to visiting scholars and the entire University. The breadth of musical subjects, geographical regions, genres, and styles covered in the Music Library’s holdings is designed to encourage inter-disciplinary and multi-cultural study, while specific emphasis is also placed on materials which represent life in Southern California, and metropolitan Los Angeles. Recognizing the specialized needs for scholarly research and performance, the Music Library offers a balance of electronic and material resources, and a variety of services to enhance these resources.

The Music Library is committed to a user-driven collection development policy. The library selector works closely with the Thornton Faculty Library Committee and department Chairs to expand the collection to meet curricular needs. USC’s emphasis on liberal arts and the diverse curriculum within the Thornton School of Music require a unique Music Library. Beyond a core collection of resources in American, European, and international musics, the Music Library also provides music resources in all academic disciplines. Emphasis is placed on materials which build upon the strengths of Southern California, and specifically Los Angeles, with respect to our location among the regions of the Pacific Rim.

Coverage

Academic publications on all areas of music are collected, including: biography, history, organology, criticism, analysis, collected letters, etc. Musical scores, recordings, and videos of all musics are collected. Reference works include: dictionaries, encyclopedias, indices, bibliographies, thematic catalogs, discographies, collection catalogs, congress reports, as well as musical score facsimiles, critical editions, complete works, anthologies, etc.

Music materials are primarily housed in the Music Library according to material type. (Locations include: score collection, miniature score, oversize score, book stacks, oversize books, journals, reference, audio CDs, CD-ROMs, and videos.) Rare and fragile items are held both in the music librarian’s office and in Special Collections. Outdated materials (such as superseded technical manuals) and pitdated formats (such as LP recordings) are held in Grand Depository. The Music Library holds current journals only, with bound volumes transferred to Doheny. Second copies and general-audience materials on music are held in Leavey. Archival materials are held under the auspices of the Archival Research Center in various locations on campus.

There are no geographical limitations for the purchase of music materials.

Materials purchased are primarily new or recent publications. Out of print material are collected as needed. All historical periods are collected in representative balance.

The Music Library collects the following material types: performance and study scores, monographs and anthologies, dictionaries and encyclopedias, scholarly journals, audio CDs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, microfilm, microfiche, electronic resources, and archival materials.

Non-print materials are collected regardless of language. Printed materials are primarily in English. Scholarly resources in foreign languages are vital to the core collection, and are collected with respect to funding.

Academic/University press publications are purchased by standing order through the Yankee Book Peddler Approval Plan. 20th century scores published in Europe are purchased by standing order though the Harrassowitz Approval Plan. Journals are purchased by subscription through various international vendors, or directly from the publisher. Audio/visual materials are purchased by firm order through various vendors, or directly from an account with Tower Records.

The Music Library collects archival materials such as: manuscripts, autographs, letters, miscellaneous documents, etc. Materials considered out-of-scope for purchasing purposes may be considered as part of an archival collection. Priority is given to materials considered vital for music scholarship, as well as materials relating to USC faculty and alumni, Los Angeles and Southern California history, and Pacific-Rim musical culture

Electronic Resources such as journals, indices, dissertation abstracts, dictionaries and encyclopedias, etc. are vital for the research and curricular needs of the Thornton School of Music. Current indispensable holdings include: RILM, RISM, RIPM, IIMP, DDM, and Music Index.

Unless held as part of an archive the following are not collected or retained: orchestral and choral music with 10 or more loose parts, sheet music, audio/visual materials in outdated formats, membership lists, purchasing catalogs, and promotional ephemera.

Theatrical Works:

  • Musicworks {1986} Performed: Los Angeles Theater Center “Fantasia” (on ‘Amazing Grace’) and a new piece titled “Bloomenveldt” stood out for their freshness of invention and lush arrangements, respectively. “Bloomenveldt,” inspired by a novel by Norman Spinrad, laid down a thick tropical groove at the outset and, in a Glass-like fashion, explored its narrow harmonic boundaries exhaustively there-after. “Tao-Mec,” “Passage” and “Songs from the Japanese” all suffered from a defiantly post-modern bashfulness about turning a coherent musical phrase: many squeaks, squawks and howls but not much meaning therein.” – LA Times
  • Landscape of the Body {1987} Performed: LA Court Theatre Playwright: John Guare
  • Minimata {1989} Performed: Los Angeles Theater Center Reza Abdoh Reviews: “Always there is an insistent score that segues undeterred from the percussive sounds of an African Pygmy chant to “Tea for Two” or the theme of “The Beverly Hillbillies” sung in Japanese. The performance climaxes in a sonorous crescendo mass (by Myrow) that underscores the next-to-last scene of the piece much the way Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings supported and enhanced the battle sequences in Platoon.” – LA Times
  • Stevie Wants to Play the Blues {1990} oerformed: Los Angeles Theater Center oirector: Simon Callow otars: Paula Kelly and Amy Madigan Reviews: “The engaging music by Fredric Myrow is sufficiently distracting to cover up the play’s philosophical holes.” – LA Times “Myrow’s melodies are well crafted, notably “Love Is Crazy,” “Confusion” and the deliberately campy “Wherever I Go.”” – LA Times
  • My Rotten Life {1991} Co-composer: Michael Andreas Commissioned & Performed: Susan Tyrell Reviews: “lush music.” – LA Times
    • Behind the Veil {1991-1992}
    Performed: LA Classic Theatreworks Stars: Georgia Brown and Ed Asner
  • Timon of Athens {1993} Performed: Milwaukee Repertory Director: Monte Davis
    • Mango – John Anson Ford Theater {1994}
    Choreographer & Performer: Naomi Goldberg Concept: Nasser Nasser, based on a folk tale from Trinidad
  • Cheap {1996} Performed: ACT Seatle

Biography

Harry Haag James was born on March 16, 1916 in Albany, Georgia. His father was a circus bandmaster and his mother was a horse rider and trapeze artist. Harry’s first public performances were at the age of three as a drummer, and by the age of 12 he led his father’s band in performances. In 1936, James joined Benny Goodman’s band where he was a featured player. He left three years later at the age of 23 to form his own band. His career as a trumpeter and big band leader spanned 6 decades and included collaborations with Frank Sinatra, Betty Grable, Buddy Rich, Sam Donahue, Juan Tizol, Louie Bellson, Neal Hefti, Ernie Wilkins and Rob Turk. He appeared in a number of films, with and without his band and trumpet. He was also famous for his third marriage to Betty Grable. James died in Las Vegas on July 5, 1983.
