Introduction
In order for us to serve you and your students as efficiently as possible, we would greatly appreciate your cooperation in observing the following guidelines for submitting your requests for course reserves:
1. Please submit your required reserve requests as early as possible prior to the start of the semester. Requests are processed in the order in which they are received.
2. Completing all requested information on the Reserve Request Form will expedite the processing of your request.
3. For personal items which you submit, please include the title, author and source (book, journal, etc) of the material.
- We recommend that the citations in your class syllabus and Request Form coincide.
4. Library staff does not photocopy materials for reserves. If photocopies are needed for Electronic Reserves please submit clean photocopies of individual journal articles or book chapters to ensure the best quality scans.
5. If providing photocopies, for your own protection, you must ensure that you have complied with library Copyright Guidelines. This includes supplying a copy of the title page and the copyright statement (usually found on the back of the title page) for each item, in all instances where you are not the copyright holder of the material submitted. The material will not be processed without them.
- A photocopy/scan of a journal article or a single chapter from a book may be placed on reserve for one semester only. Copyright law prohibits the use of the same material in subsequent semesters without the publisher’s permission. The library does not seek permissions; this is the responsibility of the instructor.
- You are required to sign the copyright statement at the bottom of each Reserve Request Form acknowledging your understanding of the copyright responsibility. Electronically submitted forms are considered electronically signed with your submitted name and email address.
- A Note on journal article and book chapter requests: If the USC Libraries has a current license for access to digital versions of copyrighted material (e.g., Electronic Resources), photocopies may not be scanned. In these instances, if available, a static link to the licensed electronic version of the material will be added to the electronic reserve system, thus providing direct access to the requested material.
- Electronic Reserve items available via a link to a licensed Electronic Resource may be used in a subsequent semester, without further permissions.
- A Note on Course Readers: The library recommends utilizing the bookstore course reader service to obtain copyright permissions for items that cannot be placed on e-reserves. The USC bookstore may be able to obtain copyright permission to produce a course reader for the class. Course readers may be placed on physical reserve at a library service desk, however they cannot be scanned for electronic reserves.
For further details of the application of the law, please see the following:
We look forward to working with you, and thank you in advance for your cooperation.
